Family Ericaceae
indian pipes

Indian pipes, Bayfield County, WI, July, 1997
Monotropes have now been placed in the heath family. These plants have no chlorophyl and are parasites of fungus associated with tree roots. Because they need no light they are often found in deep shade. Each stalk has one flower.
