Leatherwood twigs and seed pods , Mason County, MI, April 2012
At any time of year, the twig shape is definitive to identify this plant. Each fork does not grow flat from the branch, but forms a Y from the old wood, and the new growth sprouts from that. Look for the Ys even when there are no leaves.
